COURSE DELIVERY

  • Lectures Three lecture/discussion periods per week with corresponding reading assignments from the text. We will also discuss current issues, and articles may be posted to the class website for review. Although class is scheduled for three meetings per week, several Friday in class meetings will be substituted with construction site visits or individual/group projects.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

  • The course provides a general overview of basic construction materials, properties, manufacture, and uses.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Students will learn elements relating to the principles of construction methods and techniques. Basic understanding of the built world that surrounds us and how it is constructed.

METHODS OF GRADE DETERMINATION

  • Quizzes NO MAKEUP Quizzes. There will be Ten (10) quizzes given during the semester and a final. Test results must be discussed in person within 72 hours after the test has been graded and returned. After 72 hours the grade is final. Makeup exams will not be given. NO MAKEUP EXAMS.
  • Quiz Grades The lowest quiz grade not counting the final will be omitted from the final grade
  • Final Exam Final exam will be given during the last day of class.
  • Team Project Reports Teams of 2-4 students will identify a construction project around campus or the Gainesville area, and submit 3 progress reports during the semester. Late submissions will be accepted up to 48 hours after due date with a 50% penalty. After 48 hours, nothing will be accepted for credit. Digital photo reports may be substituted for written reports with approval from instructor. 5 to 10 photos may be submitted (labeled by Project title, team initials, and brief description).
  • Bonus points Bonus points opportunities will be given through the semester in class.
  • Individual Course Paper This paper will be based on individual research covering a topic of the student’s choice. Late submissions will be accepted up to 48 hours after due with a 50% penalty. After 48 hours, nothing will be accepted for credit.
  • Grade Makeup
    Final grades will be calculated as follows:
    Top three of four in-term exam grades @ 100 points 300
    Final exam (or 4th semester exam) 100
    Team Project Reports (3 @ 25 points each)  75
