A total of 297 students earned degrees from the University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning following the Spring 2024 semester. The graduating class was celebrated publicly May 2-6 with various commencement ceremonies on the UF campus.

“Knowing that many of these graduates did not get to experience a proper high school graduation due to the global pandemic four years ago, it was an extra special day to celebrate with them in person,” DCP Dean Chimay Anumba said. “Their dedication, creativity, and hard work have not only enriched our campus community but have also prepared them to make meaningful contributions to the built environment.”

Legendary M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management graduate Bryan E. Kornblau (BBC ’81) was honored at DCP’s Name Recognition Ceremony Monday as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. The Richmond, Virginia, native founded Eagle Construction of Virginia in 1984 and molded it into the largest privately held homebuilding company in Virginia. The company has built more than 8,000 homes, developed more than 150 communities, and was selected as the 2022 “Best Homebuilder” for the area. He was also Chairman and Principal of Markel|Eagle, which is an integrated real estate construction and development company.

Kornblau is also a 2017 inductee of the UF Construction Management Hall of Fame and founding member of Anumba’s Dean’s Advisory Council.

On the student side, graduating landscape architecture student Ashley Pike received the DCP Undergraduate Student Academic Achievement Award for distinguishing herself as an exceptional student in regard to her grades, research and publications. She had already been recognized as a winner or finalist in numerous design competitions by the American Society of Landscape Architecture Florida Chapter for her group’s work on two of her studio projects. She also assisted on a research project with the UF Center for Landscape Conservation and Planning to assess trail suitability across Cumberland Island National Seashore and work in part with the National Park Service.

“Ashley Pike is a standout student with an exemplary academic record and there is no question that she will make the Gator Nation proud,” said Dan Manley, the undergraduate coordinator and instructional associate professor in the UF Department of Landscape Architecture. “I expect that she will do great things in her career.”

Graduating architecture student Andrew Long took home the Undergraduate Student Leadership and Service Award for distinguishing himself as an exceptional leader in the DCP and UF community. Long founded the Swamp Haunters Design Team through the Gator Theme Park Engineering and Design Club and represented the UF School of Architecture in the prestigious Toronto Metropolitan University Thrill Design Competition. When he wasn’t raising money for the homeless through the Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP), he was leading his fellow students in building New York City site models in Design 7 and Venice site models in Design 8 at the UF Vicenza Institute of Architecture in Italy.

“Andrew truly stands above his peers through his design talent, industriousness, participation in activities outside studio, and leadership and collaboration abilities,” said Jamie Lindsey, an adjunct instructional assistant professor in the UF School of Architecture. “He is not only an extremely well-rounded designer but is also a grounded and interested in the wellbeing of his classmates and surrounding community.”

The following five students had their Doctor of Philosophy degree conferred by UF Friday evening at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in a university-wide commencement ceremony: Nurah Alfowzan, Elizabeth Calienes Lay, Elizabeth Cronin, Hamidreza Esmaeillou and Shangde Gao. An additional 73 Gators obtained their master’s degree from the college, while a whopping 219 students received their bachelor’s degree in six different disciplines (construction management, fire and emergency services, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and sustainability and the built environment).
