PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The University of Florida’s Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program is a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited professional degree meeting the educational credential architects need to be licensed as a registered architect in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 2-year program offers three structured design studios, related support courses, and optional electives to meet the 52-credit hour requirement. During the second year of the program, students will develop a personal focus of study working individually with two faculty advisors (of their choosing). The faculty Chair and committee member will serve to guide the student’s development of a thesis design project referred to as Project-in-Lieu-of-Thesis (PILOT). Student may also select a written thesis option. Students are asked to considered themes of interest during the first year and then develop that into a focused study during a 2-course sequence, over two semesters, and then completed in the final semester of the program. Students applying to the program will follow one of three curricular tracks, as described below, based on their academic qualifications.
Portfolio: A portfolio of work is required for admission M.Arch program. (Note: a portfolio of work is not required for admission M.Arch program for students graduating from the B.Des program at UF with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. However, to be considered for scholarships and teaching assistant positions, a portfolio of work is required as part of the application process and must be submitted prior to the application deadline.)
The SoA Admissions Committee reviews all program applications and makes the final determination of acceptance and program status. When accepted into the Master of Architecture degree programs, students are assigned to one of the three curricular tracks and may be offered scholarships or teaching assistantship opportunities based on their standing and qualifications. Applicants will be notified of the terms of their acceptance by letter via email.
Evaluating the content of a non-accredited degree: Of the three curricular tracks available, two (Track I and Track II) require certain accreditation criteria to be met in preparatory education experience. Admitted students who did not complete the B.Des program at UF will be asked to provide additional documentation for review by the Admissions Officer and Associate Director of Graduate Programs. The accreditation criteria to be evaluated are explained in detail on this page.
The Master of Architecture Degree comprises three tracks:
Track One (Advanced Program) is a 52-credit degree for students who’ve completed a pre-professional degree like our Bachelor of Design. It is typically completed in two academic years.
Track Two (Second Professional Degree) is a 30-credit degree for students who’ve completed an accredited professional degree. It is typically completed in one academic year.
Track Three (Core Program) is a 100-credit degree for students whose undergraduate degree is in a field other than architecture. It is typically completed in four academic years.
