As someone who aspires to be a project manager for a major US company, M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management student Josie Blohm is on track to reach her goals, interning this summer at BRV Construction in Miami. As a Miami native, it is special to return to her hometown as a project management intern.

Part of her responsibilities include, but are not limited to, making “pitch deck” presentations for clients, assisting the project managers in their daily tasks, reviewing plans for errors and inconsistencies, going to client meetings, and doing punch walks with the project managers. For someone whose goal is to build buildings that help people, she could not have asked for a better internship.

“The people in the office, especially my project manager Stephanie Rodriguez, and her willingness to teach, have made this the most rewarding summer for me,” said Blohm, who is scheduled to graduate this fall with her master’s in construction management.

Despite Blohm juggling several tasks with tight deadlines, Rodriguez echoed the positive sentiments, saying Blohm has “been doing a fantastic job so far and we’re thrilled to have her as a part of the BRV team this summer.”

Blohm credits the College of Design, Construction and Planning with preparing her for this internship, saying it set her up with industry connections and the tools and resources needed to succeed. As a result, she has taken her in-class learning out in the field and translated it over into the real world.

“I wish I would have known that I was going to end up at Rinker in grad school, because I probably would have taken more DCP/Rinker courses in my undergrad as electives to better prepare for grad school,” said Blohm, who is an active member of the UF Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and the grad director for Sigma Lamba Chi.

Her favorite course so far has been Safety Risk Management with Dr. Andrew Wehle because Dr. Wehle taught the class “in more of a Socratic Forum style and fostered divergent thinking in every assignment and activity we worked on.” Knowing that construction is not a solitary industry, most of her assignments and activities were group projects, and there is a lot of room for discussion with other groups and help from faculty.

All in all, the connections she has made through BRV and Rinker continue to remind her how important the DCP network of graduates across the globe is.

“The DCP network of graduates is unlike any of the other colleges at the University of Florida, in that I have never seen as many alumni so enthusiastic about helping recent graduates in their career growth.”
