The Fall 2016 Advanced Graduate Design 3 Architecture studio recently completed its design/build project for a stair and platforms on Seahorse Key in the Gulf of Mexico. Prof. Charlie Hailey’s studio group included the following students: Olivia Alfonso, Cameron Buck, Elizabeth Cronin, Daniel Fragata, Nick Johnson, Patricia Lanzas, Jiahao Lu, Laura Rodriguez, Amanda Rutherford, Reed Smarrelli, Rachael Stitzel, Jamison Sweat, Levi Wiegand, and Anggita Zurman Nasution. The project involved multiple stakeholders, including Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge, Seahorse Key Marine Lab, and IFAS; and the completed stair access to the Gulf-side beach will benefit the lab’s researchers and visitors to the island. Four miles offshore, the site’s remoteness and its coastal wilderness offered unique conditions for the design and construction process. The project is exhibited this week in the gallery, along with student work from Architecture Design 1 studios. The Grad 3 studio has begun its next design/build project for Cemetery Point Park in Cedar Key. This final project includes a workshop with architects Sami Rintala and Philip Tidwell, visiting as Ivan Smith Scholars from Norway and Finland.
