With the goal of getting her LEED AP and continuing to work as a consultant, University of Florida Design, Construction and Planning student Ashley Huebner is chasing her dreams down this summer as an environmental intern with Miller Legg & Associates. There, as a generalist, she possesses a broad knowledge base, which is useful when working on projects involving construction, engineering and landscape architecture.

“I conduct field visits to analyze the conditions of the site, mainly looking for the presence of wetlands or protected species,” Huebner said. “I also put together reports for federally funded projects to ensure National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance and talk directly to clients.”

For the Lake Worth, Fla. native, some of the projects have required her to learn as she goes. After all, it can be challenging to work on projects that don’t have a clear precedent to follow. What sets this internship apart from others for the sustainability and the built environment major is that she’s been given the opportunity to handle projects with the confidence of her project managers like Miller Legg Senior Biologist William Mohler III.

“Ashley has been an exceptional addition to the team,” Mohler, Huebner’s supervisor, said. “She’s intelligent, highly motivated, and takes initiative on even the most complex tasks with confidence and professionalism. She requires minimal direction and consistently delivers high-quality work. Her drive and dependability make her stand out as a strong contributor to Miller Legg.”

Huebner appreciates the trust, saying her bosses allow her to work independently while they provide guidance and review the results. This has allowed her to gain more confidence in her abilities and knowledge as a professional. She even credits her site analysis class at DCP because she uses the skills she learned there daily at her internship in Sunrise. On a fun side note, she has even been able to meet some cool animals, as the company is permitted to relocate gopher tortoises!

Scheduled to graduate this upcoming spring with her bachelor’s degree, Huebner joined the college’s Green Building Club as a freshman in 2022. Since the beginning of 2024, she has served as the president of the club. She will leave with a legacy, having been on the winning team for DCP’s Witters Competition in 2023.

“Not only did that competition make me more confident in my career goals, but I met my best friends through the experience.”

Still, Huebner recognizes how important the DCP network of friends is around the globe.

“DCP is a tight-knit community, and those who have graduated from the college want to hire people who come from here.”
