The College of Design, Construction and Planning is proud to announce that Charlie Hailey, architecture professor, won the 2018-2019 UF Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award. This is the University of Florida’s most prestigious and oldest faculty award.
Each year, this award is given to a faculty member who demonstrates distinguished achievement in both teaching and scholarly activity and visibility within and beyond the university.
Last year, Hailey was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship so his work has definitely been visible here at UF and elsewhere. His book, “Slab City: Dispatches from the Last Free Place,” a project with photographer Donovan Wylie, was also recently published by MIT Press.
Hailey’s area of specialization is the history and theory of the built environment. Within this area, he is particularly interested in connecting history-theory coursework with design studio, studying interactions between material culture and cultural landscapes, and discovering overlaps between place-making, designing and building.
“I am committed to helping students make connections between their design studies and the historical, philosophical and humanistic contexts of that work,” Hailey stated. “More than just appreciation, but active engagement that prepares them for academic and professional careers as it also enriches a life of inquiry.”
“We are very proud of Dr. Hailey and his accomplishments,” DCP Dean Chimay Anumba said. “He is highly committed to the success of his students and is a productive scholar.”
Hailey has had a positive impact on many students here at DCP and we look forward to him continuing his teaching and research at our college for many years to come.
