From paper to practice, on a construction site in Davie, Florida, University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning student Evenie Bonny is witnessing the theories she learned in class come to life as a project engineer intern at ANF Group Inc. Construction Development.

“By engaging in real-world projects, I am able to apply theoretical concepts from courses such as construction management and sustainable design to tangible scenarios,” Bonny said.

Bonny, who is pursuing her Bachelor of Design in architecture, is sharpening her hands-on and professional skills daily. Her duties as an intern include managing

Requests for Information (RFIs), submissions, change orders and meeting minutes. She also attends document project meetings and distributes updated drawings and specifics to key stakeholders.

In her two years at UF, DCP has helped her grow and engage in developmental opportunities, practical experiences and professional development that have exponentially prepared her for the internship at ANF Group Inc.

Still, the transition from classroom to professional setting came with its challenges. Shifting from a structured academic schedule to a dynamic real-world environment meant learning how to balance various tasks alongside new tools, workflows and industry-specific knowledge

“Each organization has its unique norms and communication styles,” Bonny said. “Learning to adapt and navigate these dynamics has been crucial for effective collaboration.”

Despite the challenges, Bonny found her experiences highly rewarding, especially when she got to see a project from start to finish. “One of the most fascinating moments was seeing how a large-scale construction project is managed from beginning to completion,” she said. “It’s impressive how something conceptual becomes a real, functioning space,” she said.

Bonny credits her time at ANF Group Inc. with helping bridge the gap between her hands-on experiences and her education.

“This hands-on experience not only reinforces my classroom learning but also enhances my problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, which are essential for success in this field,” she said.

For Bonny, her internship at ANF Group Inc. isn’t just a line on her resume; it’s a step in her journey, a step towards her career.

As she looks to the future, Bonny plans to pursue a master’s in Urban and Regional Planning and aims to merge architectural principles with planning.

“This field allowed me to integrate architectural principles with comprehensive urban planning to create sustainable, inclusive and resilient communities,” Bonny said.

Bonny also credits the mentorship within her internship for insightful growth.

“The mentorship and guidance provided by experienced professionals have been invaluable. Engaging with mentors has offered insights into industry best practices and career development, fostering both personal and professional growth,” Bonny said.

Her mentors at ANF have seen Bonny’s growth and skills throughout her time with them.

“Evenie has most definitely exceeded expectations as an intern, but we would expect nothing less from a fellow Gator. She’s been ready, willing, and able to learn everything we’ve thrown at her and continues to ask for more,” Christine Graeff, director of operations at ANF, said. “Eager to learn and hardworking, she will be a great addition to any team in the workforce. We’re hopeful that she will join the ANF family if she pursues a career in construction management one day!”
