This summer marked another year of research engagement and student travel in the Dominican Republic. URP graduate student Emory Young spent 6 weeks in Punta Cana investigating sustainable waste management practices. The experiential learning opportunity was facilitated by URP faculty Kyle Dost and Grupo Puntacana’s Ecological Foundation.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Florida celebrated its 2024 Annual Student Celebration at Cypress & Grove Brewing Company. The event was filled with excitement as students, faculty, and alumni came together to honor achievements within the URP community.

Anand Bhatia, a second-year MURP student at the University of Florida, recently participated in the Lake Nona Impact Forum. Representing the College of Design, Construction and Planning, Anand engaged with top space exploration leaders, including the COO of SpaceX and the NASA Administrator, discussing future lunar missions and the integration of space in urban planning.

Dr. Abhinav Alakshendra’s Economic Development Planning course at the University of Florida developed a proposal for downtown Newberry, suggesting street and landscaping upgrades, a central plaza, and a railway park to revitalize the area amidst its recent population growth.

Following our Tampa Bay group, we’ve launched our second UF URP alumni group in South Florida.

Reflecting on the impact of urban planning on communities, the 15th Annual Ernest R. Bartley Memorial Lecture hosted by the UF Urban and Regional Planning Department featured Ashon Nesbitt, a distinguished MURP alumnus, as the keynote speaker. His insightful talk emphasized the potential of planning in revitalizing disenfranchised areas and shaping a more equitable future in Florida’s cities.
