Biography

Armin Mostafavi is a design researcher with a focus on human-centered design, investigating how designed environments shape human behavior, cognition, and well-being through psychophysiological measurements.

He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences in Architecture from Vienna University of Technology, an MSc in Architectural Engineering in Construction from Politecnico di Milano, and a BSc in Architectural Engineering from the University of Tehran. His background includes academic research, teaching, and architectural practice across Europe and the United States, where he has engaged with human behavior, building performance, pre- and post-occupancy evaluation, and emerging technologies in both professional and educational settings. He is currently a Postdoctoral Associate and Lab Manager at Cornell University’s Design and Augmented Intelligence Lab, where he contributes to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of architecture, environmental psychology, and neuroscience, working on projects funded by the NIH, the NSF, and NIDILRR.

The central aim of his research is to develop computational tools and techniques to advance understanding of how design, whether virtual or built, impacts human behavior and well-being. By leveraging user behavior data and biofeedback, his work establishes frameworks for assessing human–environment interaction within an evidence-based design approach. His research integrates immersive virtual reality with biometric and neurophysiological measures, including EEG and eye-tracking, to examine how design elements such as lighting, spatial configuration, and materiality influence perception, cognition, and emotional response across healthcare, educational, and workplace environments.
