To prepare future building professionals for interdisciplinary collaboration and the transition into careers in the AEC industry, the model of an interdisciplinary collaborative BIM studio (“Co-Lab”) was developed by The Pennsylvania State University Departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Architectural Engineering.  This design studio was first offered during the academic year of 2008/2009 and continues to be offered one semester each academic year.  Students of six different disciplines – architecture, landscape architecture, construction, structural, mechanical, and lighting/electrical engineering are provided the program and site of an actual project and are given the task of designing the project using building information modeling (BIM) technology for data collection, analysis, design development, data coordination, systems integration and project presentations.  As part of the design process students also develop a BIM Execution Plan along with estimates, schedules and constructability analysis for their proposed designs.
Faculty of architecture, landscape architecture, and architectural engineering coordinate the studio and provide discipline and technical instruction.  Design practitioners and contractors from the actual project team interact with the students in regular workshops and project reviews/presentations.  The design of the actual project is used for benchmarking of the student designs for functionality, energy efficiency, cost and schedule.  Additional technical systems and building information-modeling experts outside of the actual project team are also brought into the studio as necessary.
Based on feedback from former students and the AEC Industry, The Interdisciplinary Collaborative BIM Studio “Co-Lab” has proven to be effective in not only providing experience in the application of BIM technology but also as a simulation of a more “real world” interdisciplinary project design process leading to mutual understanding of the technical, aesthetic and social aspects of a collaborative design process.
