The purpose of the symposium titled “Modern Architecture as Place-Making in Florida,” is to engage the general public in a dialogue on Florida’s rich and unique legacy of modern architecture, the significance of modern architecture in Florida’s architectural history, and the importance of the state’s modernist buildings in global architectural histories. As part of the University of Florida’s commitment to public engagement, this goal of this symposium is to foster a dialogue between the scholarly community, non-academic professionals, and the communities of the larger North Florida region. We seek to open up Florida’s rich modernist architectural histories beyond the higher educational territories of the classroom, scholarly publishing networks, and academic conferences—many of which are not easily accessible to the community at large. We hope to promote a deeper and broader intellectual understanding of modernism as part of the state’s unique heritage.
