URP Holds Student Logo Design Competition for Department’s 50th Anniversary

The UF Department of Urban and Regional Planning recently held a design competition where students were tasked with creating a logo for the department’s 50th anniversary, a milestone being celebrated this year.
MURP student Matthew Mullings, who also serves as Vice President of the UF Student Planning Association, was selected as the winner, with a design that merges the spirit of UF with the world of urban planning.
“To me, urban planning is best represented by a cityscape,” said Mullings. “Keeping with the UF brand, I surrounded the gator with blue to make it seem like he’s swimming in front of this city skyline, and then added orange to flesh the rest out.”
Mullings’ logo will be used across URP throughout 2025 to celebrate the department’s 50th anniversary and commemorate the accomplishments of the department over the years.
When asked to reflect on his experience being a URP student, Mullings said his time here has been invaluable to his future career.
“Due to the tight-knit nature of the program, I’ve been able to form really impactful connections with professors and alumni, many of whom are leaders in the planning field,” said Mullings. “The curriculum of the program allowed for in-depth learning, and the support system created by the department to assist students with whatever they might need is something I’m truly grateful for.”
As the department gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary, it plans to highlight accomplishments by faculty and alumni that have contributed to its success over the years. Stay tuned for more interesting stories about the last 50 years of URP.
