UF students partook in the 7th iteration of an International Joint Studio this March-April. The collaboration brings together students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners from the University of Florida, the University of Indonesia, and Cardiff University.

Over its seven-year run, the studio has investigated issues ranging from green infrastructure, environment and health, historic preservation, and the impact of COVID-19.  This year’s topic was The Good City, in which students researched and addressed the following themes in Gainesville, FL, Cardiff, UK, and Jakarta, Indonesia:

  • Green and Healthy Environment for the good city
  • Preservation and Innovation in the Built Environment for the good city
  • Circular Economy for the good city
  • Social Justice for the good city
  • Climate Change, mitigation, adaptation for the good city

The studio provides an immersive two-week experience for students at the University of Florida, Cardiff University, and University of Indonesia to work with peers in an interdisciplinary environment. Kyle Dost, AICP, who facilitated this year’s studio, says that “the experience brings together people from vastly different parts of the world – with vastly different perspectives and backgrounds – who are able to work together to identify solutions to shared urban issues.” The studio will continue in the future and organizers hope to offer more in-person experiences when it is safe to do so.

The following are reflections from participants and organizers of the studio:

“This workshop was an excellent forum to bring people together to learn and generate ideas to advance our understanding of planning, its philosophies, and approach to real-world practices without constraints we may encounter at our typical place of learning or work. It provided the opportunity to expand beyond a single culture’s definition of good.” – Bridget Ellis, MURP online student

“I thought the process was a neat experience…it was great to collaborate with other planning professionals from across the globe and hear insights on how planning is managed in other countries/areas.” – Nicole Hall, MURP online student
