Urban and Regional Planning Department faculty member Dr. Christopher Silver recently had a book published by Routledge in its Research in Sustainable Planning and Development in Asia series.

Urban Flood Risk Management: Looking at Jakarta, looks at the city’s historical practice in designing waterways during colonial rule and how processes changed through its years during the Indonesian republic up to today as a megacity.  The assessment is made possible by examining government documents and through multidisciplinary literature.

Dr. Silver’s book cover via Routledge.

Today, about 40% of Jakarta sits below sea level and has dealt with intense flooding for decades.  By examining the processes that led to this development, the book allows other researchers to understand urbanization in Southeast Asia, as well as general topics from water management to the politics of planning and development.

The book is currently available for purchase and a discount is available at checkout by using the code “FLY 21.”
