NOAA Coastal Inundation Mapping Course at FIBER

On November 6th and 7th, the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience (FIBER) hosted the Coastal Inundation Mapping Course supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA. The course was led by NOAA experts Billy Brooks, Geospatial Analyst, and Doug Marcy, Coastal Hazards Specialist.

Participants engaged in lectures and hands-on exercises, deepening their understanding of coastal inundation models, inundation products, mapping fundamentals, elevation data, and the latest methodologies in coastal inundation mapping. The event brought together a diverse group of around 20 participants, including students, researchers, and planners from nearby counties.

Feedback from participants was extremely positive, highlighting the relevance of knowing and understanding the diverse flood data products produced by governmental institutions and the details about using them through GIS mapping techniques.

FIBER extends its thanks to NOAA and all participants for making the event successful. Equipping our future planners and designers with these critical skills is vital for advancing flood preparedness and resiliency planning across Florida’s vulnerable coastal regions.
