Summer 2024: Intangible Heritage at Risk

June 10 – August 9, 2024

Explore Nantucket’s heritage this summer with a trip to the nation’s oldest operating field school for historic preservation, Preservation Institute Nantucket (PIN) in partnership with the University of Florida’s Historic Preservation program. For over half a century, PIN has been at the forefront of documenting and safeguarding Nantucket’s tangible history. Now, for the first time, we’re delving into the island’s intangible heritage – the rituals and traditions passed down through generations.

From cranberry harvesting to scalloping, fishing, and agricultural practices, we’re exploring the very essence of island life which is now at high-risk due to the ongoing impacts of climate change. As a PIN student, you’ll work alongside local experts, diving deep into the history and evolution of these cherished traditions. Through hands-on fieldwork, special tours, and community engagement, you’ll witness firsthand how climate change is reshaping Nantucket’s heritage. The result of this work will be shared with the community through public presentations, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and with student recommendations for continuing and/or interpreting the ecological traditional knowledge.

Of course, time for fun is an integral part of PIN! Embrace island life with excursions around the island. Explore local museums and restaurants, celebrate the 4th of July festivities, and enjoy the surf and sun at pristine beaches. Kayak and paddleboard through winding creeks, embark on group bike adventures, and savor the flavors of Nantucket’s farm-fresh produce, freshly caught seafood, and local brews.

Join us in preserving Nantucket’s legacy for future generations. Together, let’s uncover the stories that make this island truly special. Apply now for an unforgettable summer experience with PIN2024!

PIN is open to graduate and upper-level undergraduate students from any institution across the world.
