Climate Park, Washington Street

Yue Dong, University of Florida, Master of Urban and Regional Planning

In the context of sea level rise and the lack of recreational space, a “climate park” was designed for a specific area in conjunction with previous PIN projects along Washington Street, with the goal of providing a recreational park to address and mitigate the environmental crisis.

Was your inspiration a PIN report or other? What is the missing information? Why does this need to be addressed?

Last year’s project: Washington Street and The Creeks Resilience and Adaptation Area Strategy, 6 August 2021.

The project mentions environmental issues such as sea level rise that are to be experienced in the future around Washington Street, and the general response. I proposed the park under the general direction of the previous countermeasures.

Why is your work important?
The historic coastal areas are threatened and the coastal landscape has not been valued and developed for a long time. To document and assess the historic urban landscape of Washington Street area of Nantucket Town and develop an overall resilience and adaptation strategy, including focus areas and demonstration projects that respond to coastal hazards, the need for entertainment and leisure, and sea level rise.

What was your methodology? What resources did you use?

Nantucket Recreation & Parks Master Plan, 2019
Nantucket Hazard Mitigation Plan
Resilient Nantucket

What are your findings, proposal, or recommendations?

On Nantucket, I found that there is a lack of squares, parks, play and leisure places, a lack of places where visitors can stay and rest for a long time, and a lack of walking paths, walking landscape paths and displays of local special plants. My suggestion is to raise the importance of these places.

What are next steps or further research to be done?
The next study to be done is the feasibility of the park implementation, the feasibility of the park design including the budget, the water resistance of the building materials, and in-depth discussions with the shareholders and user groups reflecting on how the design meets their needs.
