Landscape Architecture Students Take Top Honors at International Design Competition

Three Landscape Architecture Implementation Studio students recently received international recognition for their designs at a prestigious competition in Portugal this semester. Will Marshall’s “Paths of Peace” was selected as one of two alternate finalists. Audrey Foster’s “Re-Imagining Peace” and Hayden Bertone’s “Awaken” entries both won first place honors.


A Climate Positive Approach to Materials for Resilient Sites: Meg Calkins Speaks at UF Landscape Architecture

The University of Florida’s Landscape Architecture program had the honor of hosting Meg Calkins, FASLA, FCELA, from NC State University for the 10th anniversary of the Edward D. Stone, Jr. Lecture Series.

The Gainesville Chapter of Florida ASLA and the Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (SCASLA) helped to organize the event which saw an excellent turnout that included a mix of students, faculty, and practitioners in attendance. The evening concluded with a lively reception hosted by Kompan, where attendees enjoyed great food and conversation.  


Sketching the Spirit of Place: A Day with Chip Sullivan and Elizabeth Boults

The University of Florida’s Landscape Architecture program recently welcomed renowned landscape architect and artist Chip Sullivan, along with his collaborator Elizabeth Boults, for a fun and captivating lecture and drawing workshop. The event, “Wisdom of Place,” invited students to explore new ways of seeing and engaging with landscapes through drawing and storytelling.


Celebrating a Decade of the Edward D. Stone Jr. Lecture Series

The Edward D. Stone, Jr. Lecture Series has been a key part of the University of Florida’s Landscape Architecture program, fostering intellectual conversation and engagement with practitioners for the past decade. Since its inception in 2015, the series has brought leading voices in landscape architecture and urban design to share their insights and experiences with students, faculty, and professionals. 

Edward Stone, Jr., the lecture series’ namesake, founded the renowned firm EDSA (Edward Durell Stone Jr. and Associates), which has helped shape the practice of landscape architecture in Florida and around the globe. EDSA’s work spans urban design, parks and public projects, hospitality and tourism, campus planning, as well as commercial and mixed-use development.  

Over the years, the firm has been a strong supporter of the department, reinforcing its commitment to the next generation of landscape architects.


DCP Wins $750k Grant from National Academies for Interdisciplinary Studios

Faculty in the College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP) at the University of Florida are excited to share news of a 3-year, $750,000 grant from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Gulf Research Program (GRP).

The NASEM GRP grant was awarded to an interdisciplinary team across DCP including Jeff Carney (Associate Professor, Architecture and Director of the FIBER), Andrea Galinski (Assistant Professor, Landscape Architecture), Kyle Dost (Instructional Assistant Professor, Urban and Regional Planning and Director, MURP Online Program), Christian Calle (Assistant Scholar, Architecture), and Carla Brisotto (Assistant Scholar, Architecture, and Assistant Director of the FIBER).

Through the grant, faculty will build on a two-year pilot of GulfSouth Studio (GSS) program, which supports educational initiatives that help students address the challenges faced by the Florida Gulf Coast related to disaster recovery and community resilience.


Shaping the Future: Landscape Architecture Students Engage with Industry Leaders at Career Day

As part of the 2025 DCP Industry Expo, the Design & Planning Career Day provided an invaluable platform for students across the landscape architecture department to connect with industry leaders and gain real-world insights into their chosen professions. Held at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, the event brought together design and planning firms for a day of networking, learning, and career advancement.


UF Center for Landscape Conservation Planning Partners with 1000 Friends of Florida for Ongoing Webinar Series: “Planning to Protect the Florida Wildlife Corridor”

The UF Center for Landscape Conservation Planning is partnering with 1000 Friends of Florida on the next iteration of their webinar series introduced last year. The series, “Planning to Protect the Florida Wildlife Corridor”, includes webinars focused on good urban policy and its relationship to land protection. 

It also discusses challenges and opportunities to maintain agricultural lands in Florida and special planning challenges in the urban-rural interface.

Famous Gainesville Intersection Focus of Annual Witters Competition

UF DCP recently hosted the 2025 Witters Competition, where teams were tasked with implementing interdisciplinary redesign solutions for the intersection of NW 13th Street and University Avenue on UF’s campus. Seven teams competed for a grand prize of $6,000, with the winning design being “Alligator Alley”, a solution prioritizing pedestrian safety and green spaces.
