Remembering Longtime Professor and Chair Herrick H. Smith

The University of Florida Department of Landscape Architecture is deeply saddened by the passing of Herrick H. Smith, who served as professor and longtime chair of the department from 1966 to 1995.

During his tenure, Smith left a lasting impact on generations of students through his passion for teaching and mentorship of developing professionals. One of Florida’s earliest registered landscape architects, he was devoted to strengthening the discipline and advancing its impact and presence throughout the state. 

“I was saddened to learn of the passing of Herrick H. Smith. Although I did not have the privilege of knowing him personally, his legacy is deeply woven into this program,” said department Chair Dr. Jules Bruck. “As an early leader in the development of this program, he is responsible for making UF Landscape into what it is today. His contributions continue to be felt through generations of students, faculty, alumni, and the enduring traditions he helped establish.”

The department continues to honor his legacy through the Herrick H. Smith Scholarship, which is awarded each year to a student who exhibits exceptional professional promise.
