We Are Interdisciplinary
Our Interior Design program is the only one in Florida housed within a college that includes Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Sustainability in the Built Environment, Urban and Regional Planning, and Construction Management. This unique structure creates a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment where collaboration is not just encouraged—it’s built into everything we do.
When Dean Chimay Anumba joined the College of Design, Construction and Planning in 2016, he introduced the vision of OneDCP—a unified approach where all disciplines work together to shape the built environment. To support this vision, we launched DCP1003: Creating Our Built Environment, a foundational course that introduces students to the interconnected roles of design, planning, and construction professionals. The course emphasizes real-world collaboration and professional practice across disciplines.
Interdisciplinary learning starts early. Interior Design students spend their first two foundation studios working alongside Architecture students, building lasting relationships and learning to communicate using a shared design language. These studios emphasize problem-solving, iterative design, and the integration of multiple perspectives.
Collaboration continues through college-wide initiatives like the Annual Witters Competition, where students from different disciplines team up to tackle complex design challenges in a fast-paced charrette format.
This fall, we’re opening the DCP Ramos Collaboratory—a cutting-edge hub designed to foster collaboration across disciplines. With flexible studio spaces, maker labs, research facilities, and informal gathering areas, the Collaboratory will reflect real-world industry practices and support innovation at every level. It’s a space where students, faculty, alumni, and industry partners come together to solve pressing challenges and shape the future of the built environment.
At DCP, interdisciplinary collaboration isn’t just a concept—it’s a daily reality that prepares our students to lead in a complex, connected world.
