Rehabilitation and Adaptive Use Plan for Old Mount Carmel Baptist Church
Gainesville, Florida
Constructed in 1944, the Old Mount Carmel Baptist Church was a center for Civil Rights activism in Gainesville through the 1970s. UF has been working with the congregation since 2019 on rehabilitation planning for this National Register landmark. Funding for UF’s work included laser scanning, HABS documentation, and oral history interviews and videos. Consultants REG Architects provided the existing conditions assessment and report, and in partnership with StoryN Studio, led a stakeholder schematic design workshop in April 2022. The deliverables for this grant will be leveraged in future grant funding for rehabilitation of the building as an educational and community center.
