Beinecke-Reeves Distinguished Achievement Award in Historic Preservation

The Beinecke-Reeves Distinguished Achievement Award was created in 2004 to honor professionals and organizations who most embody the “Spirit of Historic Preservation” in Florida and beyond. This significant award is given annually to an individual or group having demonstrated dedication to historic preservation. The award is named in honor of Walter Beinecke, Jr. and Professor Emeritus F. Blair Reeves. Reeves is the founder and developer of the historic preservation program of the University of Florida, and both he and Beinecke worked together with the Nantucket Historic Trust which led to the intuitive teaching partnership now known as Preservation Institute Nantucket (PIN). Beinecke and Reeves were both awarded the coveted Crowninshield Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for their accomplishments in historic preservation.

Michael May, Executive Director: Acknowledging the long-term relationship and many collaborations with University of Florida to help advocate, research, and preserve Nantucket’s historic architecture and cultural landscape including the more recent efforts to record the island’s physical environment through 3D imaging.

Dade Heritage Trust

Becky Matkov and Dolly McIntyre: Awarded for the general efforts of Dade Heritage Trust to advocate and save the historic sites and cultural resources of Miami and Dade County and specifically for the organization’s work to recognize and preserve the city and county’s mid-century modern heritage.

The Villagers, Inc.

2011

The Villagers Incorporated was organized in 1966 to save the Douglas Entrance, a Coral Gables landmark. Since then, this group has helped save many endangered South Florida landmarks as well as provided tens of thousands of dollars in student scholarships in historic preservation

Salley Jude

In recognition of her many contributions to Historic Preservation including helping form the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and The Villagers, working with them to ensure the preservation of landmarks such as the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas home.
Sallye and her husband have also put considerable effort into making preservation work at the local level including providing a model for adaptive uses in Key West and restoration of the Miami River Inn, an elegant Guest House and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Arthur I. “Buddy” Jacobs

In recognition of his support of historic preservation programs at UF and in particular to his contributions to the PI:N program. He has served on the Board of Advocates since 1983 and worked closely with Walter Beinecke to achieve the successful transfer of Nantucket properties to UF. He was instrumental in persuading the Florida Legislature to finalize creation of the Beinecke-Reeves Chair in Historic Preservation at UF.

Distinguished Achievement Award
2019 Frances Fontaine Bourque
Mrs. Bourque helped initiate and spearheaded efforts to save many of Delray Beach’s most significant and historic landmarks and public spaces including Old School Square. Her tireless efforts led to the sensitive redevelopment of downtown and an economic resurgence. Her service has been recognized by other groups including the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, which honored Mrs. Bourque with their highest achievement for lifetime service to the preservation of Florida’s heritage.
