How to apply

Admission to our Ph.D. program is granted at both the college and school or department level.

  • We encourage you to contact potential advisors early in the process, but you must apply through the graduate school for consideration.
  • Applications are reviewed carefully by at least three Doctoral Research Faculty members for evidence of qualification.
  • The admission decision rests with the department’s PhD committee.
  • To comply with state law, your application must include all post-high school education and employment, as well as information about ongoing international affiliations and research funding. Please ensure this information is included on your curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé.

Graduate certificates help you gain specialized knowledge and extra expertise to make studies truly multidisciplinary — with an impressive academic credential to go along with your prestigious MLA degree.

St. Pete Pier

Until recently, the St. Pete Pier in St. Petersburg, Florida consisted of just a long concrete drive with parking spots and an architectural folly at the end. The aim of the Pier’s 2020 redevelopment was to turn this car-centric waterfront area into a pedestrian-friendly public space, protect the bay’s plants and animals, and integrate the pier into the city’s waterfront park system.

The new 26-acre park provides green space, much-needed shade, gathering spaces, and beach access. It also bolsters the city’s resilience in the face of rising sea levels and increasingly severe storm surges. This 2023 Case Study Brief was prepared by our 2023 CSI team: University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning in partnership with Ken Smith Workshop, W Architecture & Landscape Architecture, and Kimley-Horn.

Research Centers: Local Impact, Global Reach

The State of Florida, a microcosm of global concerns, faces complex challenges including urbanization, an aging population, social justice, tourism, climate change, and sea-level rise, and degradation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Ph.D. candidates in Landscape Architecture are addressing these issues through research, outreach, collaborations, and partnerships with other departments, colleges, universities, agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
