2022 Studio

Take a deep dive into the interdisciplinary spring 2022 GulfSouth studio

A white yacht is docked on a calm river bordered by landscaped walkways, green plants, and railings under a blue sky with scattered clouds. Palm trees and buildings appear in the background.
A surreal image of a suburban street lined with palm trees, with the sky replaced by an ocean view and a distant beach, blending sunset light with rippling water above the road.
A group of five people work collaboratively on architectural drawings overlaid on a large aerial map, surrounded by tools, sketches, and tracing paper in a bright studio space.

Student Reflections

  • Gulf Coast context

“I gained a better understanding of the challenges of climate change facing the Gulf of Mexico and massively improved my visual presentation abilities.”

  • Interdisciplinary teams

[I] learned a lot about different disciplines and how to co–exist with contrasting personalities. [It] broadened my scope of architecture after having to consider code, funding, community push back, gentrification, protected wildlife and environmental issues, etc. Overall, this semester has been very beneficial to my future in this field.”

  • Professional preparation

I thrived in the unstructured nature of Studio. It was really important for me to develop my ideas and respond to the community needs after the site visit…this studio course was the one academic experience that prepared us the most for professional situations. Planners should take the URP studio and the interdisciplinary studio like I did, to be the most prepared for the planning industry.”

  • Real world application

This project was super eye–opening on what it’s like to have to consider real–life issues and what working with other disciplines will look like in the future. It was also very informative in generating a new way of thinking that will produce new and resilient design, keeping in mind future generations.”
