GulfSouth Studio

The GulfSouth Studio engages faculty, students, and partners to approach the challenges facing Florida Gulf Coast communities through interdisciplinary teaching, data-driven research, cutting-edge technology, and collaborative partnerships.

Tackling Complex Challenges

Environmental, social, and infrastructural challenges require new analysis processes, design approaches, policy strategies, community engagement methods, and technologies. To develop these new approaches, we must focus on ways to come together across different disciplines – each with our unique perspectives, methods, and tools. Thus, the GulfSouth Studio is an interdisciplinary design studio, a digital platform to envision and share design ideas, and a program linking faculty and students with common teaching/research interests around creating a more resilient future for the Gulf Coast of Florida.

ENGAGEMENT-BASED, TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN

Providing the platform for students to explore and solve complex issues across Florida’s Gulf communities

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

GulfSouth bridges the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, journalism, and sustainability to investigate challenges from many perspectives.

Three young people stand outdoors among trees. One person gestures forward with a pen while holding a notebook, another wears a blue jacket and cap, and the third holds a helmet, looking in the same direction.
A man with dark hair and a beard wears a white virtual reality headset, looking upward and smiling slightly. He is dressed in a purple shirt and stands against a plain, light background.

Harnessing Technology

Students work with emerging technologies (the internet of things, point clouds, artificial intelligence, game engines, and digital twins) as tools to design and articulate products.

Impactful Products

Coursework collaborates with community partners to produce impactful and implementable designs, models, and policies.
