The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM)

The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Gulf Research Program (GRP) is dedicated to advancing science, practice, and capacity in the Gulf of Mexico region. NASEM GRP is an independent, science-based program founded in 2013 as part of legal settlements with the companies involved in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Through this settlement, $500 million was put into a fixed endowment to be spent over 30 years on science-based research to improve offshore energy safetyprotect the environment, and enhance the health and resilience of Gulf communities. Through grants, fellowships, and collaborative projects, the GRP supports innovative solutions that enhance the sustainability and well-being of Gulf Coast communities.

The NASEM Gulf Research Program (GRP) Interdisciplinary Design Studio Funding supports university-led studios that explore innovative solutions to the Gulf of Mexico region’s most pressing environmental and community resilience challenges. As part of the Gulf Futures project, this funding opportunity enables faculty and students to engage in applied, research-based design that addresses issues such as coastal adaptation, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Through design thinking, stakeholder collaboration, and scenario-based exploration, these studios contribute actionable strategies for the future of Gulf communities.

Our Gulf South Studio was made possible through this initiative, allowing us to work with local communities to envision resilient solutions for the region.
