The Case for Green Infrastructure Teaching in Planning Curricula,&#8221; URP Professor <strong>Dr. Christopher Silver<\/strong> and collaborators in the United Kingdom (Cardiff University and University of Birmingham) explain why it is important to include lessons about <strong>green infrastructure (GI)<\/strong> in higher education planning curricula.&nbsp;The authors define green infrastructure broadly as &#8220;strategically planned networks of natural and semi-natural areas&#8230; [that provide a] life support system for communities, which not only contributes to but is essential for environmental and economic sustainability.&#8221; GI provisions of &#8220;ecosystem services&#8221; include water management, air quality enhancement, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and green space amenities for outdoor recreation, the last of which has become particularly relevant for human health and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-info-box uagb-infobox__outer-wrap uagb-block-d10df437\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/urp\/people\/people_silver\/\" class=\"uagb-infobox-link-wrap uagb-infbox__link-to-all\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Infobox Link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><div class=\"uagb-infobox__content-wrap  uagb-infobox_cta-type-all uagb-infobox uagb-infobox-has-image uagb-infobox-icon-left uagb-infobox-left uagb-infobox-image-valign-middle uagb-infobox-enable-border-radius \"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-left-right-wrap\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-image-icon-content uagb-ifb-imgicon-wrap\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-image\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-image-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"uagb-ifb-img-src\" src=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/urp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2020\/03\/Silver_headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Silver headshot\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uagb-ifb-content\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-title-wrap\"><h3 class=\"uagb-ifb-title\">Dr. Christopher Silver<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"uagb-ifb-separator-parent\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-separator\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uagb-ifb-text-wrap\"><p class=\"uagb-ifb-desc\">URP Professor and study author<\/p><div class=\"uagb-ifb-cta uagb-infobox-cta-link-style\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">From the use of urban greenbelts down to green roofs, planners and other professionals, such as landscape architects and environmental engineers, should work together to guide the use of green infrastructure for urban and regional sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-blockquote__outer-wrap uagb-block-b7f558f8\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__wrap uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none\"><blockquote class=\"uagb-blockquote\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content-wrap\"><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__content\"><em>GI is far more complex than traditional green space planning and requires particular skill sets for its successful implementation including inter-disciplinary working, enacting multi-institutional governance, and multidisciplinary stakeholder facilitation<\/em>.<\/div><footer><div class=\"uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left\"><cite class=\"uagb-blockquote__author\">From &#8220;More Than Open Space! Such a relationship exists at UF in the School of Landscape Architecture and Planning. Here, <strong>Dr. Kathryn Frank&#8217;s<\/strong> course in Environmental Land Use Planning and Management (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/URP-6421-Syllabus-Fall-2020-081120.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">URP 6421<\/a>) covers GI topics throughout, and in the final assignment students evaluate a real watershed-based plan from a green infrastructure approach, which requires the application of all the course&#8217;s modules. Understanding the interdisciplinarity of GI is aided by the environmental planning course partnering with the Department of Landscape Architecture&#8217;s course in Ecological and Environmental Policy (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/LAA-6382-Syllabus_F2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">LAA 6382<\/a>) taught by <strong>Prof. Michael Volk<\/strong>. Profs. Frank and Volk jointly teach a portion of the classes and lead field trips to world-class green infrastructure projects in town, including <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.depotpark.org\/history\" target=\"_blank\">Depot Park<\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwaterwetlands.org\/history\" target=\"_blank\">Sweetwater Wetlands Park<\/a>.
