That\u2019s when their company, e-Builder, sold for $500 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following Friday was even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s when the brothers broke the news to their 200 employees and handed out plump surprise bonuses worth tens of millions in total. Longtime workers \u2014 those who\u2019d stood with the company through thick and thin \u2014 became instant millionaires. Even new hires, days on the job, got checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI get emotional thinking about it. It was the greatest day of my life,\u201d Ron says. \u201cTo be able to thank people in a way that meant a lot to them for everything they had done for us was such a great feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the right thing to do, Jon adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did it because we\u2019d made it there as a team,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe were all crying together. None of us could keep a dry eye. It was the best day, I concur with Ron. I\u2019ll never forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither will e-Builder\u2019s workers and their families. Lives, for sure, tipped toward the sunnier that unforgettable Friday. One employee repaired his mother\u2019s roof. Another helped a brother-in-law get on his feet. Retirement accounts were fattened, college savings funds started, dream vacations planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a bad day at all for a couple of guys who\u2019d turned a UF master\u2019s thesis into a fortune. That\u2019s How e-Builder came to be. Almost 30 years ago and with the internet just finding its footing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jantevy\/\">Jon (BDES \u201993, MSBC \u201994)<\/a> calculated that he could use the new technology to revolutionize the construction industry. Projects could be better managed; costs could be cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brothers \u2014 Jon the creative risk-taker, Ron the pragmatic manager\u2014 ended up teaming up and, in time, their tenacity and old-fashioned hard work proved Jon right. But never, Ron (BSCE \u201991) admits, did anyone expect e-Builder to end up a $500 million company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNever in a million years,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen Jon started e-Builder I don\u2019t think anyone knew what he was talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Jon had doubts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure it was going to work,\u201d he confesses. \u201cBut everybody around me at the university was supportive. That gave me a lot of confidence because they were excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back then, the brothers\u2019 wildest, wish-on-a-falling-star hope was to build the company, flip it for $10 million or so and retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, I\u2019ll start this company and, in a year, or two I\u2019ll sell it and be rich,\u2019\u201d Jon says. \u201cI was naive. The reality is I was broke for seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jon Antevy - 1993 Architecture Graduate &amp; 1994 Construction Management Graduate\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yjqE9e8fPZY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BROTHERS, PARTNERS, FRIENDS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Antevy (An-te-v) boys weren\u2019t like most kids in their middle-class south Florida neighborhood in the 1980s. While friends were goofing off, Ron and Jon were budding businessmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yona Levy, their mother\u2019s father, owned apartments, and a construction company. His grandsons were his afterschool and weekend maintenance crew, laborers and occasional rent collectors. Ron and Jon liked working side-by-side. It was comfortable. Their talk would often turn to starting a construction business of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe got the construction bug early on,\u201d Ron says. \u201cI always loved going to job sites and seeing the progress. That\u2019s how we got on that kick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe thought there was no reason we couldn\u2019t do something similar,\u201d Jon recalls. \u201cThose discussions would come up while we were painting. We must have done 400 or 500 apartments together over the years. You can catch up on a lot of stuff while doing that kind of work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">E-Builder \u2014 their software-based business designed to help construction companies streamline projects\u2014 wasn\u2019t exactly the traditional building firm the brothers had in mind back then. But it was close.With e-Builder, the Antevys had a hand in shaping skylines across America, watching hospitals, schools, homes, and sports venues rise from the dirt. The Chicago Transit Authority, California\u2019s Cedars-Sinai, Minneapolis Public Schools, North Carolina\u2019s Charlotte Douglas International Airport\u2014 all those and more than 500 other organizations from coast to coast used their company\u2019s products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, year after year after year, the construction industry recognized the Antevys for their ingenuity. So did their alma mater. UF\u2019s annual Gator 100 awards banquet honoring the fastest growing alumni-run companies counted e-Builder on its list over and over again. In 2022, the brothers received Gator 100\u2019s highest tribute, <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/news\/2022gator100recap\/\">the S. Clark Butler Pinnacle Award for sustained excellence and leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of that \u2014 the projects or recognition \u2014 would\u2019ve happened without each other, Ron and Jon maintain. Nor would it have been so sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe felt tremendous loyalty to each other,\u201d Ron says. \u201cI needed to succeed for him, and he needed to succeed for me, more than we needed to do it for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing\u2019s changed. They still enjoy each other\u2019s company \u2014 whether it\u2019s on their boat, tapping out tunes on the piano or Friday night meals with their wives, children, mother and twin brothers, Peter and Paul. All of it is an extension of the hours and hours painting apartments together, mowing lawns and plotting their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know how some people you just like spending time with? That\u2019s how it is with my brother,\u201d Ron says. \u201cPeople would laugh at us because even when we were doing very well, when we traveled together, we\u2019d share a room. We were like, \u2018We grew up together. We like hanging out. What\u2019s the big deal?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Antevy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172346\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LESSONS FROM THE OLD COUNTRY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the huddled masses before them \u2014 the Irish and German, Chinese and Mexican, Italians, Poles and Swedes \u2014 Ron and Jon\u2019s ancestors came to America in pursuit of opportunity. For their grandfather and mother and father, that meant letting lives in Syria and Israel become memories, leaving who and what they\u2019d known for a strange new place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there were things from the old country their ancestors clung to. Devotion to family. Belief in hard, honest work. Kindness. The Friday family dinners grew out of those habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a cultural thing,\u201d Jon explains. \u201cThat Middle Eastern, Israeli, Jewish culture of staying close, bringing everyone together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From their grandfather, Ron and Jon learned doggedness. Yona Levy built his businesses from little more than pure will, and despite understanding just a few English words and phrases. He also taught the boys goodness and decency. If a tenant was short with that month\u2019s rent, he\u2019d look for ways to help. And Levy would send whatever he could afford to family he\u2019d left behind in the homeland. From parents Ovadia and Viktoria, the boys learned to be humble. How to run a business. To appreciate the value of a dollar earned through sweat. Ovadia and Viktoria, like Levy, were entrepreneurs who managed their businesses (in their case, interior design and commercial properties) from the kitchen table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brothers relied on those lessons to carry them through e-Builder\u2019s darkest times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe just followed what our parents and grandfather had done,\u201d Jon says. \u201cThey were hard workers, and we outworked most people. By far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the dreary days brightened, the brothers again looked to a lesson learned from their grandfather and parents: generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not just toward e-Builder\u2019s employees. When their company sold, the brothers and their wives turned to the University of Florida, too. Ron and Rachel (BA \u201998) made large contributions to the Wertheim College of Engineering and Lubavitch Chabad Jewish Student and Community Center. Jon and Melanie <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/alumni\/make-a-gift\/\">gave the naming gift<\/a> for the College of Design, Construction and Planning\u2019s architecture building and endowed an <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/news\/2021dcpalumnientrepreneursnetworksummit\/\">entrepreneurship club in the college<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re blessed and we don\u2019t take it for granted,\u201d Ron says. \u201cOnce you can put a roof over your head and afford to eat and do things for your family, after that it\u2019s just stuff. And the stuff doesn\u2019t give you as much joy as if you can help other people \u2026 I\u2019m glad I\u2019m in the position that I can give.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That Rachel is also passionate about sharing their good fortune made giving to UF even easier, he says. Next, the couple is thinking about starting a charitable foundation. If they do, Ron would welcome the chance to team up with Jon once again on some of its projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jon\u2019s tomorrows, on the hand, are less clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill trying to figure it out,\u201d he says. \u201cI haven\u2019t really thought too much about what\u2019s next, because if I do \u2014 even if it\u2019s just dabbling \u2014 I\u2019m going to do what I do, which is throw myself into it. And I really want to have a free and clear mind for a time, and then I\u2019ll do a reset from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 27 years with e-Builder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naocon.org\/members\/jantevy\/\">and numerous accolades<\/a>, all Jon knows for sure is he wants to make up for lost moments he spent without Melanie and his kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy schedule was crazy,\u201d Jon acknowledges. \u201c[Melanie] raised our three kids, and I popped in here and there. I was feeding this baby, e-Builder, while trying to be a good father and a good husband. It\u2019s hard to do both things. So now that we\u2019ve gotten to this side, we can smell the roses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a scent, for the Antevy brothers, that\u2019s every bit as nice as that long-ago smell of fresh paint wafting through their grandfather\u2019s apartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DCP_8742-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172348\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Born to be Gators<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems almost like destiny. That is, if you were to believe in such things as meant-to-be. The sons of immigrants, their father without a high school education, ending up at UF \u2014 it\u2019s the stuff of storybooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then again, much of brothers Ron and Jon Antevy\u2019s unlikely journey to the top is like that: their ancestors coming to Florida from the Middle East, their grandfather and parents cobbling together successful businesses in a foreign land, their own rise as innovators in the construction industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Antevy brothers\u2019 story doesn\u2019t start with UF, the university has a big part in what made it magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor whatever reason, our parents were hell-bent on us going to college,\u201d Ron says. \u201cThey were like, \u2018We don\u2019t care what you do, but you\u2019ve got to go to college. No excuses. No ifs, ands or buts about it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UF was the sensible choice. It was an in-state school. A cousin was a Gator. Academics were solid. So, to Gainesville the brothers went. One to be a civil engineer. The other an architect. First Ron, a couple years later Jon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI went to the University of Florida because Ron did. I\u2019d like to think it was something more elegant than that. But it\u2019s because he was my older brother and I looked up to him,\u201d Jon admits. \u201cIt turned out that the <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/architecture\/\">architecture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/rinker\/\">construction programs<\/a> are amazing, but that was dumb luck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luck or not, as with so many Gators, their time at UF ended up being some of the best years of their lives. Here are some of the brothers\u2019 favorite memories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ron\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being a deejay at campus parties and at a downtown Gainesville club called Central City.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Freshman year in Broward Hall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tailgating and attending Gator games with friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing a few songs he wrote on the radio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jon\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working weekends at Lake Wauburg.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being part of UF\u2019s Fire Rescue Association and driving the Gainesville Fire Rescue mobile command unit in the Homecoming Parade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ice cream socials with President John Lombardi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Countless days and nights with friends at the architecture studio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last Monday in January 2018 was a very good day for Rinker Construction Hall of Famers Ron and Jon Antevy.
