Students investigated where and how people lived on the island, how industry shifts impacted housing, and researched ways that history can inform solutions for the current issues of rising housing costs and year-round availability. Students studied the intersection of heritage and housing at multiple scales, from the evolution of architectural housing types to the development of urban form and neighborhoods. Archival, architectural and urban research encompassed the 17th century to the present. Resources included: archival research, historic drawings, census data, inspection and assessment of existing residential and multi-use buildings, maps and plans, etc. Students projects addressed the complexity of issues on the island that impact housing through the island’s history; recognizing that solutions for the housing challenge must be interdisciplinary and holistic to succeed.

Students and Faculty

Caleb Arsenault, University of Florida
Nicolas Roscioli-Barran, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Hannah Cloven, Randolph College
Bridgette Murphy, University of Florida
Nicolette Lyons, University of Florida
Ella Breed, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

Dr. Cleary Larkin, Director
Erica Mollon, Co-Director

Visiting Faculty and Guest Lecturers

Dr. Maria Watson, Assistant Professor, University of Florida
Dr. Clarissa Carr, Research Assistant Professor, University of Florida
Donovan Rypkema, Principal, PlaceEconomics
Mary Ruffin Hanbury, Founding Principal, Hanbury Preservation Consulting
Danielle Worthing Porter, Director of Preservation Services, Historic Richmond
Christine Rupp, Executive Director, Dade Heritage Trust
Holly Backus, Preservation Planner, Town of Nantucket
Tony Dumitru, Museum Collections and Exhibitions Manager, Egan Maritime Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum
Mary Kay Judy, Architectural & Cultural Heritage Conservation
Mary Bergman, Executive Director, Nantucket Preservation Trust
Rita Carr, Deputy Director, Nantucket Preservation Trust
Karen Beattie, Vice President of Science and Stewardship, Nantucket Conservation Trust
Neil Foley, Interpretive Education Coordinator/Ecologist, Nantucket Conservation Trust
Betsy Tyler, Author, local historic research expert, and Nantucket Historical Association Research Fellow
Marsha Fader, AIA, Architect and Preservation expert
Jascin Finger, Deputy Director, Maria Mitchell Association
John McRae, PIN Faculty Emeritus and University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design Professor Emeritus
Jude Grissom, Artist and Writer
Angus MacLeod, Architect and Nantucket Historical Commission Chair
Will Kinsella, Chair, ACKlimate
Allen B.
