{"id":1126,"date":"2019-09-18T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T15:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/?p=1126"},"modified":"2020-05-07T14:27:07","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T18:27:07","slug":"uf-team-studying-resiliency-in-panhandle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/uf-team-studying-resiliency-in-panhandle\/","title":{"rendered":"UF Team Studying Resiliency in Panhandle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, September 17, the Florida Resilient Cities (FRC)\nteam held a community meeting in Port St. Joe, a small city on Florida\u2019s\npanhandle, to kick-off a yearlong partnership studying long-term resiliency as\nthe city and Gulf County continue to recover after 2018\u2019s Hurricane Michael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants included community leaders, residents, business\nowners, neighborhood organizations, faith-based institutions and non-profits,\nas well as representatives from local, county and state government and\norganizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/PSJ-1024x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/PSJ-1024x563.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/PSJ-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/PSJ-768x422.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/PSJ-1536x844.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/PSJ-2048x1126.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activities for the three-hour meeting focused on learning\nabout community concerns in addition to goals and values, and were organized\ninto three themes: \u201cReflecting on the Past,\u201d \u201cDescribing the Present\u201d and\n\u201cImagining the Future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The information gathered from this community meeting will be\ndeveloped into a series of potential projects for DCP faculty to take on\nthrough grant-funded research and design courses in the Spring 2020\nsemester.&nbsp;\u201cSustained engagement with the community is essential to the\nresearch and teaching partnerships that will emerge from FRC,\u201d said program\ndirector Jeff Carney. The&nbsp;FRC will present the call for proposals to DCP\nFaculty at a meeting on Oct. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Community partnerships started at the September meeting will\ncontinue through the academic year, focusing on design, planning and research\nprojects developed by faculty and students from UF. The one-year program will\nculminate in an implementation summit held in early fall 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supported through a generous grant from the Jessie Ball\nDuPont Fund, the goal of the FRC is to help communities across Florida develop\nthe capacity to be more prepared for, and more resilient to greater risk.
