Mark Lloyd, AmeriCorps chief of staff, Ken Goodson, NCCC national director, and Josie Tamayo, CEO of Volunteer Florida, joined UF administrators and GatorCorps leadership and members for a focused conversation on resilience, partnership, and public purpose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason von Meding, executive director of GatorCorps, and Jeff Carney, director of the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience, presented the program\u2019s trajectory as a Year 3 AmeriCorps initiative embedded within UF\u2019s land-grant mission, with 16 members currently serving, and more than 30 alumni since its formation in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-uagb-columns uagb-columns__wrap uagb-columns__background-none uagb-columns__stack-mobile uagb-columns__valign- uagb-columns__gap-10 align uagb-block-556d2c5d uagb-columns__columns-2 uagb-columns__max_width-theme\"><div class=\"uagb-columns__overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"uagb-columns__inner-wrap uagb-columns__columns-2\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-column uagb-column__wrap uagb-column__background-undefined uagb-block-4a6a7113\"><div class=\"uagb-column__overlay\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201c<em>We have developed a \u201cscience and service\u201d program concept, linking research on risk, adaptation, and community wellbeing with direct engagement in towns and cities across Florida,\u201d <\/em>said von Meding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-column uagb-column__wrap uagb-column__background-undefined uagb-block-e53e496d\"><div class=\"uagb-column__overlay\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/02\/IMG_0823photo-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9961\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/02\/IMG_0823photo-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/02\/IMG_0823photo-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/02\/IMG_0823photo-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/02\/IMG_0823photo-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/02\/IMG_0823photo-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>He outlined how the program\u2019s sites across Keystone Heights, Jacksonville and Gainesville stand to reflect an intentional model of working alongside communities confronting environmental change, housing precarity, and infrastructure inequities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presentation also highlighted the broader ecosystem in which GatorCorps is situated. FIBER\u2019s work spans green infrastructure, energy efficiency, conservation, disaster planning, and community capacity building, advancing a vision of resilience that is social, institutional, and technical. The integration of research, knowledge networks, and community impact positions GatorCorps as a living expression of the university\u2019s public duty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UF Leadership was represented in the discussion by Chris Hass, Associate Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs, and Karen\u00a0Thomas, Assistant Vice President, Community Relations. Thomas commended GatorCorps, saying that the \u201c<em>program delivers meaningful, measurable impact for both our students and the communities they serve. We\u2019re fortunate to have such a high-caliber program at UF, creating benefits that extend far beyond campus.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, the most compelling moments of the visit were delivered by members of GatorCorps, who spoke candidly about their ongoing work in the organization. Amaya Borroto and Isabelle Findell, students at the University of Florida and members of the FIBER service site, described their hands-on efforts to strengthen community resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These efforts included educating K\u201312 students about hazards and preparedness, restoring public access to environmental sites, supporting adaptation planning, and contributing to international research collaborations. This variety and diversity has allowed me to grow as an individual, explore my interests, and make a real impact in communities,<\/em>\u201d Findell shared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation then shifted to how service is shaping member\u2019s life trajectories.
