{"id":3302,"date":"2020-10-06T16:32:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T20:32:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/?p=3302"},"modified":"2022-09-01T10:28:31","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T14:28:31","slug":"in-height-of-hurricane-season-frc-redefines-term-resiliency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/in-height-of-hurricane-season-frc-redefines-term-resiliency\/","title":{"rendered":"In Height of Hurricane Season, FRC Redefines Term \u201cResiliency\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With winds ripping at 160 miles per hour and damages estimated at $25 billion, how does a town bounce back from a disaster?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the resilient residents of Port St. Joe, Fla., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/2019\/02\/23\/itll-rough-but-port-st-joe-sees-path-forward-after-hurricane-michael-florida\/2914230002\/\">Hurricane Michael\u2019s 2018 impact<\/a> on their small-town community will never be forgotten. However, those working in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/frc\/\">Florida Resilient Cities Program (FRC)<\/a> are aiming to make sure the town is better equipped to handle the next catastrophic event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due in part to Hurricane Michael and with financial support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dupontfund.org\/\">Jesse Ball DuPont Fund<\/a>, FRC was formed in July 2019 within the University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning. A collaborative group made up of members from DCP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/fiber\/\">Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience<\/a> (FIBER), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shimberg.ufl.edu\/\">Shimberg Center for Housing Studies<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/conservation.dcp.ufl.edu\/\">Center for Landscape Conservation Planning<\/a>, the program\u2019s mission is to help communities across Florida develop the capacity to be more prepared for and more resilient to increased risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis program goes hand-in-hand with the \u2018One DCP\u2019 vision of Dean Anumba,\u201d Associate Professor and <a href=\"https:\/\/dcp.ufl.edu\/faculties\/carney-jeffrey\/\">FRC Program Director Jeff Carney<\/a> said. \u201cIn our first year, the program brought together faculty and students from nearly every discipline in the college and many across the university. This interdisciplinary work is a prime example of how our college can make a difference in Florida and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With winds
