As an educator and researcher, Dr. Nichole Campbell supports the study and development of design methods that enhance the health and well-being of inhabitants in both socially and environmentally conscious ways. With an eye towards integrating service learning opportunities, Campbell teaches environment and behavior courses, interior design studio courses, sustainable design, as well as graduate seminar offerings with a gerontological design and/or environment and behavior focus.

Campbell’s research area is design and building that optimizes health and wellness, with a particular emphasis on elderly inhabitants and supporting social interaction through the built environment. Working with partner organizations needing a solution to a design problem, Campbell’s research is used to inform an optimal design solution. For instance, currently Campbell is collaborating with Plum Creek, a development company, in order to understand how to design neighborhoods and their social centers to better meet the needs of older adults. The findings from this current research will inform the development of a new community type Campbell coined “Ageless New Urbanism,” a community to better support residents throughout the lifespan.

Previously on the CBS-affiliated WCIA3 Morning Show in Champaign, Illinois, Campbell regularly presented design topics to a mass television audience. Campbell’s university and corporate guest lectures on sustainable building, design for the elderly and other design topics that support health and wellness include both national and international appointments.
