Ivan H. Smith Eminent Chair in Architecture

In 1986, Mr. Smith generously committed to donate a portion of his estate to fund an Eminent Scholar Chair in Architecture at the University of Florida. With this gift, the School of Architecture has established the Ivan H. Smith Eminent Chair in Architecture in his name.

Ivan H. Smith was born in Danville, Indiana on January 25, 1907 and relocated to Florida in 1903, where he had a long and illustrious career, being instrumental in several notable works around the state. Ivan H. Smith, founding partner in the firm of Reynolds, Smith & Hills Inc., created this endowment supporting a visiting professor in architecture.

Notable works for which he had principal responsibility include:

  • UF’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
  • Nuclear and Radiological Engineering Building
  • Music and Fine Arts building
  • Jacksonville University’s Council building and dorms
  • Florida State Capitol complex in Tallahassee
  • The Duval County Court House

During World War II, he was commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade and advanced to lieutenant in the U.S. Naval reserve, serving in Washington and the Southeast Asia theater where he participated in technical air intelligence in the Burma Campaign.

Ivan  Smith was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 1981.That same year, the American Institute of Architects awarded him the Gold Medal, which is the highest award made to a professional by the state’s architectural community.

Reynolds, Smith & Hills Inc. consists of a broad range of client-focused programs, each with its own multidisciplined staff of architects, engineers, planners, environmental scientists and technical support personnel. Clients are served by teams of specialists selected for the expertise and experience they can provide in specific areas of interest. Each team is supported by the firm’s total spectrum of architectural, engineering, planning and environmental services.
