The Global Lab is a cross-disciplinary research initiative focused on the study of emergent global trajectories in architectural practice, building technology, and urban policy making. Founded in 2007, the primary mission of the lab is to exploring innovative forms of research and analysis as well as new paradigms for practice and the built environment utilizing methodologies that range from applied research and studio projects to organized events such as lectures, symposia, and workshops.

Students at the University of Florida, Graduate School of Architecture participate in the Global Lab through numerous events and forums held on campus throughout their graduate studies. In the design studio, intensive 1-2 week workshops are conceived of and taught by distinguished national and international visitors with the intent of bringing a global focus to local and regional design issues. In addition, technology workshops are held each spring in order to expose our graduate students to recent advances in research and providing the opportunity to work with prominent figures in a variety of disciplines including sustainability, environmental technology, and digital environments. Finally, in order to bring attention to critical social and cultural issues which impact our profession, the G|SoA and the Global Lab sponsor and participate in a conference and symposium.

Ivan H. Smith Eminent Distinguished Professor

The Ivan H. Smith Endowment has provided significant support to Global Lab since its inception.  Ivan H. Smith was born in Danville, Indiana on January 25, 1907 and relocated to Florida in 1903, where he had a long and illustrious career, being instrumental in several notable works around the state.

In 1986, Mr. Smith generously committed to donate a portion of his estate to fund an Eminent Scholar Chair in Architecture at the University of Florida. With this gift, the School of Architecture has established the Ivan H. Smith Eminent Chair in Architecture in his name.
