African Studies

Program Participants: Esther Obonyo, Dr. Robert Ries, Donna Cohen, Claude Armstrong, Nancy Clark

Several faculty at the College of DCP have involve students with projects in Africa. Architecture students study sustainable architecture in East Africa (Prof Esther Obonyo and Dr Robert Ries, with support from the National Science Foundation) and design projects in Ethiopia and Tanzania (Prof Donna Cohen, Research Associate in Historic Preservation Claude Armstrong). UF has an articulation agreement with the University of Dar es Salaam.

On campus, The UF Center for African Studies promotes excellence in teaching and research on Africa in all the disciplines at the University of Florida. Central to this mission is sustaining contacts and expanding interactive linkages with individuals and institutions on the African continent. In addition to undergraduate education, the Center promotes and supports graduate studies as essential for the development of a continuing community of Africanist scholars. CAS is funded in part by a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center Grant which supports research, teaching, outreach, and development of international linkages. It is the only National Resource Center for Africa located in the southeastern US, and the only one in a sub-tropical zone.
